Xavier Rudd stands as one of the Australian music industry’s all-time greats, with a remarkable career spanning over 20 years. His unique and uplifting music has touched lives around the globe. Origins
Xavier Rudd grew up near the famous surfing location Bells Beach in Torquay, Victoria. Growing up in a family of seven children, he showed a keen interest in music from an early age — while still in primary school, he used his mother’s vacuum cleaner as a makeshift didgeridoo and began playing his brother’s guitar. He also played saxophone and clarinet as a child.
Immediately after finishing school, Rudd travelled to Fiji, living in villages around the country for nine months before returning to Australia at age 19. That early immersion in community, land and a different way of life would leave a lasting mark on his music and worldview.
As a teenager, Rudd recalled that when he was 10, his father took him to see Paul Simon’s Graceland tour. “I remember seeing it and knowing that that was what I was gonna do,” he said. “I had no doubt.”
The Artist & the Instruments
Beginning with his seminal 2002 album To Let, Xavier quickly captivated fans with his extraordinary talents as a multi-instrumentalist and his unwavering commitment to social and environmental activism.
His instruments span vocals, guitar, harmonica, didgeridoo, lap steel guitar and percussion. On his 2004 album Solace, Rudd performed all the instrumentation alone with only a few overdubs — including didgeridoos, slide guitars, stomp boxes, djembe drums, slit drums and harmonica.
In his own words: “It’s all about peace and happiness. That’s the blanket that seems to settle in the room when I play. I don’t really feel like it’s me and the audience — I feel like it’s all of us, one big connection, and I just happen to be channeling the energy through music.”
Live: A One-Man Band Unlike Any Other
Over the years, Xavier’s dynamic live performances have evolved from full band and trio showcases to his current internationally acclaimed one-man band format — the most intricate setup of his career to date.
The EP Freedom Sessions reveals new layers of complexity in his music, and the resulting live performances mesmerise audiences through his seamless integration of multiple instruments, intricate live looping and immersive soundscapes.
Throughout this period, Xavier has performed at major festivals in Australia and around the world, including Glastonbury (UK), Pinkpop (Netherlands), Rock Werchter (Belgium), Esperanzah (France) and the Byron Bay Blues Festival (Australia).

Activism & the Earth
Nanna, the 2015 album Rudd released in collaboration with the United Nations, champions cultural understanding and condemns racism and intolerance.
Xavier received first place in the Environmental Music Prize for his song “Stoney Creek,” donating the $20,000 prize to four grassroots environmental organisations.
